On Jokes (or, Why Everything You Know About Comedy Is Wrong)

On Jokes (or, why everything you know about comedy is wrong) by Jimmy Carr, Amanda Baker and Abi Grant is a sharp, curiosity-driven guide to what makes comedy work, written for anyone who’s ever wondered why one line lands and another dies. Blending humour theory with practical insight, it breaks jokes down into their core parts: the different “families” of jokes, how comic misdirection is built, and what timing really is when you’re trying to get a laugh. Along the way, the authors unpack how to spot patterns, write stronger punchlines, and understand why certain structures reliably trigger surprise and delight. This is ideal for aspiring comedians, comedy writers, performers, and even keen readers who love behind-the-scenes craft books, stand-up, and creative writing. Add it to your shelf and start seeing jokes—and the world—through a funnier, smarter lens.
