Written by returned Australian soldier Private Edward Lynch, Somme Mud: The Complete Edition is a firsthand account of the First World War, drafted in pencil across twenty school exercise books in the late 1920s and preserved against the odds. Told through the voice of “Nulla”, Lynch’s fictionalised self, it follows seven Australian soldiers from their departure from Sydney to the battlefields of France and Belgium. Rather than chasing glory, Lynch focuses on endurance: cold, exhaustion, fear and the stubborn routines of survival. As a battalion runner, Nulla carries messages across shattered ground under fire, where each trip could be his last. Moving through the Somme winter, the offensives of 1917 and the final advance of 1918, the narrative spans key Western Front campaigns including Bullecourt, Ypres and Passchendaele, with moments of humour and mateship threaded through the hardship.
