In The German Ward, Pip Williams returns to the world of wartime France with a story that begins in 1915, behind the lines of the First World War. An English nurse who has never had much patience for rules meets a German doctor held as a prisoner of war. What grows between them is immediate and intense, and dangerous in every sense, shaped by the pressures of conflict and the certainty that they are not meant to be together. More than a century later, a series of drawings is discovered, small scenes of intimacy that refuse to stay insignificant. As the finder looks closer, the images become a mystery to unravel: who the lovers were, what happened to them, and what the Australian artist who captured their secret was trying to preserve.
