My Brilliant Career

My Brilliant Career by Miles Franklin is a spirited Australian classic that still feels bracingly modern, following a sharp-minded young woman determined to shape her own life. Part coming-of-age novel, part social satire, it’s also a foundational work of feminist literature with an unmistakable outback setting. Sybylla Melvyn refuses to accept the narrow future laid out for her. As her family’s circumstances shift, she’s pushed between bush stations and small-town expectations, all while nursing big ambitions and a complicated view of romance, work and independence. Franklin’s voice is candid and witty, with a restless energy that makes every page crackle. Perfect for readers who love Australian literature, feminist classics, and character-driven historical fiction, as well as anyone curious about the novel that inspired the Netflix adaptation. Add it to your shelf and discover why Sybylla’s defiance still resonates.
