When The Lion Feeds

When the Lion Feeds by Wilbur Smith returns in a special 60th anniversary reissue, with an introduction by Conn Iggulden, and it’s easy to see why this is the novel that launched the beloved Courtney series.

It’s classic historical adventure with a big, propulsive story and a fiercely readable sense of place. Set in Natal in the 1860s, the Courtney twins are born into promise and conflict: thoughtful Garrick drawn to books and safety, charismatic Sean hungry for the wider world.

As duty anchors one brother, the other is swept into the brutal realities of the Zulu Wars, the temptations of gold fever, and the high-stakes lure of big game hunting across the African plains.

Perfect for readers who love epic family sagas, action-driven historical fiction, and colonial-era Africa settings with moral complexity.

Add it to your shelf and discover where the Courtney legacy begins.
